Current order in the race

1 Vettel
2 Hamilton
3 Petrov
4 Massa
5 Webber
6 Alonso
7 Button
8 Kobayashi

Rosberg has a very long walk back to the pits after that car breakdown.

Barrichello gets a drive through penalty.

Vitaly Petrov in 3rd

Vitaly Petrov is in third position. That is very interesting.  I personally feel this driver has very good potential and should be looked for this year. He might make things tough for the top running teams this year.

Ferrari ready for the pits

Alonso is in the pits. The pit time is 24.7 seconds. Thats a faster pit stop. He has changed to soft tires and comes out in 6th position.

It seems the softer tire compounds are working better than the harder compound.

Webber into the pits

Mark Webber comes into the pits for the second time. He has changed to softer tires. He was on the harder compound tires and was struggling with them.

Button fighting with Kobayashi

Jenson Button has fallen in the order after that drive through penalty. He is currently fighting with Kobayashi for a track position. I think he managed to pass him with a brave overtaking move.

Barrichello Spins

Rubens Barrichello spins while trying a overtaking move on Rosberg. Rosberg's car touched Barrichello's car. Rosberg has car failure and is out of the race. Barrichello comes into the pit for a new nose. It's a very big blow for both Mercedes GP and Williams.

Australian Grand Prix Live

The first race of the 2011 season is on. Vettel is leading the field and Lewis Hamilton is in second place. Button did a great overtaking move on Massa, but cut the corner and got a 10 second penalty. So he is currently in 12th position. Things are going away from McLaren Mercedes. Ferrari are struggling because I feel they don't have a faster car. There are battles going on everywhere in the order.

Qualifying - untouchable Vettel

Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull crushed their opposition in Albert Park on Saturday to grab pole position for the Australian Grand Prix by a stunning eight-tenths of a second, the world champion being in a class of his own as he lapped in 1m 23.529s in Q3.

Lewis Hamilton showed that McLaren’s Friday form was far from the fluke some believed, by snatching second place on the grid from Red Bull’s Mark Webber, with a lap of 1m 24.307s compared to the local hero’s 1m 24.395s. McLaren’s Jenson Button kept Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso at bay with 1m 24.779s for fourth, the Spaniard having to settle for 1m 24.974s for Ferrari.

Renault’s Vitaly Petrov was the surprise of qualifying with an excellent performance for sixth place in 1m 25.247s, which left team mate Nick Heidfeld in the shade, then came Nico Rosberg on 1m 25.421s for Mercedes, Felipe Massa on 1m 25.599s for Ferrari after spinning in Turn One on his final out-lap, then Kamui Kobayashi on 1m 25.626s in the promising Sauber C30 and Sebastien Buemi on 1m 27.066s in the lead Toro Rosso.

Rubens Barrichello and Adrian Sutil enlivened Q2 by spinning; the Brazilian dropped his Williams on his out-lap and took no further part, thus assuring himself of 17th on the grid, while the German spun his Force India on the exit to the last corner and ruined a good lap. He lines up 16th on 1m 31.407s.

Ahead of them, as Vettel again went fastest, Michael Schumacher’s hopes of challenging the Red Bulls were never realised and he failed to get into the top 10 with 1m 25.971s. That left him ahead of Jaime Alguersuari’s Toro Rosso on 1m 26.103s, Sergio Perez’s Sauber, which the Mexican rookie will start 13th on the grid thanks to 1m 26.108s, and fellow new boy Paul di Resta who’ll start 14th in the Force India after a solid lap of 1m 26.739s.

There was drama for Renault in the dying moments of Q1. Nick Heidfeld vaulted into the top 17 with his final lap, but Massa was on a quick one too for Ferrari, and displaced Robert Kubica’s replacement. That left the German 18th on 1m 27.239s. Behind him came the Lotus T128s of Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli, closer to the midfield than last year but not close enough, on 1m 29.254s and 1m 29.342s respectively. Timo Glock continued Virgin’s sudden improvement to 21st on 1m 29.858s, with Jerome D’Ambrosio 22nd on 1m 30.822s in the sister car.

Both HRTs ran throughout, and Vitantonio Liuzzi did a fantastic job in only a handful of laps with the brand new car to lap in 1m 32.978s, as team mate Narain Karthikeyan managed 1m 34.295s. But with the 107 percent exclusion lap time at 1m 31.266s based on Vettel’s fastest time of 1m 25.296s, the Spanish cars failed to qualify and will not race on Sunday.

Schumi: Don't count on Mercedes Win

Michael Schumacher has played down claims Mercedes GP are one of the favourites for the Aussie GP win.
Schumacher set the pace at Barcelona last week, posting the fastest lap time seen at the Circuit de Catalunya in a 2011-spec car.
The German was over three-tenths up on the second best time, which was also set on the Friday by Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.
The 42-year-old's pace prompted Alonso to predict that Mercedes GP "can be one of the favourites for Melbourne" as it's "normal that, with a quick car, Michael should immediately be competitive."
The seven-time world champion, though, downplayed his W02's pace.
"We have made a lot of progress with the car, so I'm quite happy," Schumacher said.
"Having concluded all our reliability work at the last test, we concentrated on setting up the car, fine-tuning, understanding it down to the last detail.
"Right now, we are not concerned with our reliability - we have had some issues, but that is why you go testing - and we are on the progress curve like we want to be.
"I guess we're not quite in a position (to win), but then I wasn't expecting to be in this position right now. However, I know where we are, and we are working very well."
He added: "We clearly know Red Bull are very strong and are the team you have to look at. But the season is long and there is a big question mark as to who is coming up behind. I hope we play a sufficient role in that."

Fernando Alonso has no complaints

Fernando Alonso has no complaints with Ferrari's upgraded package but admits he still doesn't know where the Scuderia are.
Alonso was in action at Barcelona on Friday, the penultimate day of pre-season testing, taking over from team-mate Felipe Massa.
It was once again proved to be a productive day for Ferrari with the double World Champion covering 141 laps with a best time of 1:21.614, which put him second on the timesheets.
"Once again, the car has proved to be very reliable, which is always good news," Alonso told his team's official website.
"The updates that the team prepared for this last test have improved the handling of the car and we managed to do a good simulation of a grand prix weekend, with reasonable lap times.
"Where are we compared to the others? We are all together here in Barcelona... But joking apart, we will only discover the truth in Melbourne.
"Tyres used, fuel loads, test programmes: there are too many parameters in play and they can make a big difference in terms of outright performance.
"Right from the start of these tests, we have always concentrated on our own work, trying to improve the car and be reliable: how clever we have been, we will see in two weeks' time."
But while testing may have been the main focus at Barcelona, many in the paddock were thinking of the people in Japan with Alonso saying the tragedy makes one take note of life's priorities.
"Confronted with a tragedy like the one that has struck Japan, Formula 1 and all its problems to do with tyres, wings and engines is way down the list of priorities and my thoughts go first and foremost to the victims and their families," said the Spaniard.

Hamilton out to improve image

Lewis Hamilton has turned to entertainment guru Simon Fuller in his bid to become a global icon.
Hamilton's decision ends a year of speculation after he stunned the Formula One world by sacking father Anthony as his manager just two weeks prior to the start of last season.
After at times becoming frustrated in handling his own affairs last year, the 26-year-old pursued a global management company to take up the reins.

Hamilton narrowed down his options to Fuller, who has David Beckham and Andy Murray on his books, as well as IMG, who handle the likes of Tiger Woods and Roger Federer.
The choice may surprise many, but as he has previously aired tentative acting and musical ambitions, and given his girlfriend is Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, the choice was perhaps obvious.
Fuller, who this year set up new company XIX Entertainment, is one of the most influential men in the music industry, both in terms of management and the production of television shows such as the phenomenally-successful 'Idol' franchise.

Explaining his reasoning in teaming up with Fuller, Hamilton said: "It was important I took my time to make this decision as it had to be right for my career and my long-term future.
"I spoke to many interested companies in recent months, but I felt Simon and his team not only wanted to help me become an even better racing driver, but they also shared my ambitions for the longer term."
Fuller, who also works with Jennifer Lopez and The Spice Girls, has described it as "an honour" to be teaming up with Hamilton.

"I've met Lewis and his father several times in the past and kept an eye on his career closely over the years," said Fuller.

"Like any British fan I have watched with pride and admiration his achievements, incredibly winning the world championship at such a young age.

"He's not only one of the leading sportsmen of his generation, he will, I believe, become one of the best of all time."

Despite the animosity that initially lingered between Hamilton and his father following the former's contentious move, the two are now reconciled and the latter could not be happier given his own high regard of Fuller.
"Lewis has wisely taken his time to find a good person to look after him," said Anthony.
"I met with Simon a couple of years back and he was then at the top of my list as my potential replacement.
"I'm happy to see that two years on Lewis has also come to his own opinion about Simon and made his own decision."

For McLaren, they now know the identity of who they will be dealing with when it comes to Hamilton's contract, which has just two more years to run.
Although currently earning £10million per year, and with his roots firmly embedded in McLaren who provided him with his route into F1, Hamilton may start to review his options if the team again fail to provide him with a car to win the world title.

Following a wretched pre-season for McLaren, the team head into the opening grand prix in Australia on March 27 already appearing as if they will be playing catch up.

It makes this a critical season for McLaren and Hamilton, with team principal Martin Whitmarsh appreciating his driver's "ever-growing global appeal" that further enhances the marque's brand.
Naturally, Whitmarsh will be hoping the partnership continues to be a long-term affair.

"Lewis has been part of the McLaren family since he was a kid when he was introduced to us by his father Anthony, who did so much to inspire his son's career which led him from karting to Formula One," said Whitmarsh.

"However, now it's gratifying to see Lewis open a new chapter of his career.
"We at McLaren will relish joining him on his journey, both on and off track, working closely with Simon and his team."

Japan MotoGP Postponed

The earthquake and tsunami in Japan have caused next month's round of the MotoGP World Championship to be postponed.
The event, due to be staged at the Motegi circuit north of Tokyo on April 24, will now be run later in the year.
The FIM confirmed a combination of the problems caused by the natural disasters and radiation leaks from nuclear plants had caused the race organisers to reschedule.
A volcanic eruption in Iceland and the subsequent chaos caused to air travel forced last year's race to be put back to October.
The new MotoGP season is due to get under way at Losail in Qatar on Sunday when Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo will begin the defence of his title.

Vettel to stay at Red Bull until 2014

Red Bull have announced on Monday that Sebastian Vettel will continue to drive for the team until the end of the 2014 season. Last year, at just 23 years-old, Vettel became the sport’s youngest-ever world champion after scoring 10 pole positions, five victories and 256 points in the team’s RB6.

"The reason why I'll stay until 2014 with Red Bull Racing is that I feel very comfortable in the team," he told Red Bull's official website on Monday morning. "I am proud to be part of the team, and I am proud of what we have archived so far and will achieve together in the future."

The German has been supported by Red Bull since 1998 and is a graduate of the Red Bull Junior Team. After spells in Formula Three and Formula BMW, Vettel made his Formula One debut in 2007, standing in for an injured Robert Kubica at BMW Sauber, before securing a full-time Toro Rosso race seat later that season.

During his first full season with Toro Rosso in 2008 he became the sport's youngest winner with a stunning victory at the Italian Grand Prix. The following year he switched to Red Bull's 'senior' RBR team for 2009. He took four wins that year to finish second in the drivers’ championship, before taking the title in 2010.

Vettel will once again team up with Australian driver Mark Webber in Red Bull's line-up for the 2011 season.

Barcelona day five - Rosberg heads washed-out final day

2011’s final day of pre-season testing saw almost nothing in the way of meaningful running as heavy rain hit Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. With just four teams in action, McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton was the only man to set a time in the morning, before Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg clocked the session’s fastest lap as conditions improved very slightly late in the afternoon.

"It was tricky out there today; there wasn't a lot of grip, but it was really useful to get the experience on the Pirelli wet tyres," said Rosberg. "We have made a lot of progress over the four tests this winter and it's really nice to see that things are going in the right direction. We are on the up for sure, and all credit to the team for getting the upgrades on the car and, most importantly, to see that they are working as expected."

Unofficial Saturday test times from Barcelona:
1. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes GP, 1:43.814, 35 laps
2. Pastor Maldonado, Williams, 1:44.333, 23
3. Lewis Hamilton, McLaren, 1:44.560, 33
4. Michael Schumacher, Mercedes GP, no time, 5
5. Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, no time, 5

Last 2011 car unveiled as HRT’s F111 breaks cover

HRT became the final team to reveal their 2011 car on Friday as they took the wraps off the F111 in the pit lane of Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya during this week’s final pre-season test. The Spanish team’s recently completed line-up - Narain Karthikeyan and Vitantonio Liuzzi - were both in attendance as the new machine was unveiled to the assembled media.

“I’m looking forward to driving the new car, it will definitely be better than last year’s but I still don’t know how much better," said Karthikeyan. "It will be a challenging season as we haven’t used the car so I expect Australia to be a tough start. Still, I am ready for the challenge and will give it my best. Tonio has a lot of knowledge from driving recently in F1, so this will surely be very positive for the team."

Barcelona day four - Schumacher on top for Mercedes GP

Mercedes GP’s Michael Schumacher ended Friday on top of the timesheets as this week’s final pre-season test continued at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. Schumacher’s best at the Spanish circuit, a 1m 21.249s, was over three-tenths of a second quicker than second-placed Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari.

With Schumacher’s team mate Nico Rosberg in third, it was a good day all round for Mercedes GP. Schumacher completed the majority of the team's programme as they added further new aerodynamic parts to their upgrade package, with Rosberg taking over for the final hour of the day.

Unofficial Friday test times from Barcelona:
1. Michael Schumacher, Mercedes GP, 1:21.249, 67 laps

13. Jenson Button, McLaren, 1:25.837, 57
14. Jerome D’Ambrosio, Virgin, 1:27.375, 46

Barcelona day three - Sauber’s Perez ousts Red Bull

Sauber’s Sergio Perez has ended Red Bull’s two-day reign at the top of the timesheets after setting Thursday’s quickest time in testing at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. Perez posted a best lap of 1m 21.761s as this week’s final pre-season session continued at the Spanish track.

With McLaren and HRT not in action, ten of Formula One racing’s 12 teams were out on track. Perez’s fastest time was over three-tenths of a second quicker than the best from Ferrari’s Felipe Massa in second. The Mexican carried out set-up work in the morning, followed by a qualifying simulation before lunch and almost a complete race simulation in the afternoon. He covered 95 laps.

Unofficial Thursday test times from Barcelona:
1. Sergio Perez, Sauber, 1:21.761, 95 laps

De la Rosa rejoins McLaren as reserve driver

After a spell racing for BMW Sauber last year, long-term McLaren tester Pedro de la Rosa has rejoined the British team as their official test and reserve driver. De la Rosa originally joined McLaren back in 2003 and worked closely with the team for over seven seasons, helping develop cars which scored 29 victories and the drivers’ world championship with Lewis Hamilton in 2008.

“Of all the teams I’ve driven for in Formula One, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes is the one that really feels like home,” said the Spaniard. “So I’m very excited about returning to the team to help push the development of the MP4-26. Lewis and Jenson already have an extremely positive and productive working relationship - so, building on and adding to their existing rapport, I'm aiming to do everything I can to help them get even more from our car, our engineers and our technical resources back at the McLaren Technology Centre.”

Barcelona day two - Red Bull reign again as Vettel takes top slot

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel matched his team mate Mark Webber’s Tuesday success by setting Wednesday’s fastest time as this week’s final pre-season test at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya continued. Vettel posted a best of 1m 21.865s to beat the second-placed Toro Rosso of Sebastien Buemi by half a second and Webber’s Tuesday time by almost seven-tenths.

Vettel completed 112 laps in the RB7 as he carried out a variety of long and short runs. The team also undertook some pit-stop practice ahead of the Australian season opener. Despite his pace, Vettel remains open minded about Red Bull’s position in the pecking order.

Unofficial Wednesday test times from Barcelona:
1. Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, 1:21.865, 112 laps
2. Sebastien Buemi, Toro Rosso, 1:22.396, 120
3. Vitaly Petrov, Renault, 1:22.670, 116

Liuzzi chosen by HRT as last slot on 2011 grid is filled

HRT have announced that Vitantonio Liuzzi will race for them this season. Liuzzi, who was ousted from his seat at Force India by new signing Paul di Resta, joins Narain Karthikeyan in the Spanish team’s 2011 line up.

Pirelli hail FIA's tyre regulation revisions

Official Formula One tyre suppliers Pirelli have welcomed the amendments to the regulations announced by the FIA on Tuesday. One tweak to the tyre usage rules will allow the Italian manufacturer to evaluate new tyre types throughout the year at Grand Prix meetings.

At some events, all the teams could be supplied with an additional specification of dry weather tyre to test during Friday’s two free practice sessions. The option to try out new tyres will be entirely at the discretion of the FIA, together with Pirelli, and it will only be exercised if the correct opportunity arises.

Barcelona day one - Webber sets the standard for Red Bull

Red Bull’s Mark Webber topped the timesheets as the final pre-season test began at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya on Tuesday. Webber’s best time, a 1m 22.544s, was almost four-tenths of a second faster than the quickest lap from McLaren's Jenson Button in second.

The weather made life tricky for the eight teams in action, with lower-than-expected temperatures and a blustery wind hampering their programmes at the Spanish circuit. Most, however, enjoyed productive days, with Webber managing to complete almost 100 laps in the RB7.

Unofficial Tuesday test times from Barcelona:
1. Mark Webber, Red Bull, 1:22.544, 97 laps
2. Jenson Button, McLaren, 1:22.910, 74
3. Vitaly Petrov, Renault, 1:22.937, 27

WMSC modify tyre usage and safety car rules

The World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) met on Tuesday and agreed a number of changes to the sporting regulations, which will be applied with immediate effect. The amendments include tweaks to safety car periods and tyre usage. The FIA also revealed the Circuit Design Group is to examine Grand Prix circuits to identify the possibility of increasing overtaking opportunities.

Details from the WMSC in full:
Amendments have been made to the Sporting Regulations for immediate application:

At certain events, one additional specification of dry weather tyre may be made available to all teams for evaluation purposes. Teams will be informed about such an additional specification at least one week before the start of the relevant event. Two sets of these tyres will be allocated to each driver for use during P1 and P2, and any such tyres must be returned to the tyre supplier before the start of P3.

One additional set of ‘prime’ specification tyres may be made available to all drivers. Teams will be informed about such an additional set at least one week before the start of the relevant event. In this instance, the additional set will be available for use during P1 and P2. One set of ‘prime’ tyres must then be returned to the tyre supplier after P1, and two further sets of ‘prime’ and one set of ‘option’ specification tyres returned before the start of P3.

The safety car speed limit (an approximate 40 percent decrease in lap time) will now be enforced over two laps instead of one. The purpose is to ensure that cars are driven at a safe speed until they reach the safety car.

During a safety car period the pit exit light will remain green for the duration, unless the race is subsequently suspended.

Other than when the safety car has been asked to use the pit lane, no car may enter the pits while the safety car is deployed unless it is for the purpose of changing tyres.

Bahrain rescheduling decision to be taken on May 1

Following a World Motor Sport Council meeting in Paris on Tuesday it has been announced that a decision on the possible rescheduling of this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix will be postponed until May 1.

The Sakhir race was due to take place from March 11-13, but the Kingdom of Bahrain withdrew from hosting the opening round of the 2011 FIA Formula One World Championship in order to focus on a new process of national dialogue to resolve the country’s current political situation.

The season opener will now take place in Australia from March 25-27.

Final test in Barcelona sets Australia countdown in motion

In little under three weeks’ time everyone will be assembled on the Melbourne grid readying themselves for the start of the Australian Grand Prix. But before the curtain is raised on the 2011 championship, the teams have one last chance to wrap up their development programmes, evaluate new upgrades and improve their cars at this week’s final pre-season test.

Following the cancellation of the Bahrain race and the preceding Sakhir test, the pre-season schedule had to be hastily rearranged. This week’s replacement session is being held at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya from Tuesday to Saturday, with the teams running four-day programmes.

Christian Klien: My sights are still trained on HRT’s vacant seat

Christian Klien has revealed he’s making every effort to land the final vacant slot on the 2011 grid, at HRT. Klien, who raced for the Spanish team at three Grands Prix in 2010, is working hard behind the scenes to secure the second seat alongside Narain Karthikeyan, despite some tough competition from other drivers.

“My manager Roman Rummenigge is in permanent contact with the team's management,” Klien explained in an interview with his official website. “Needless to say I would love to drive for HRT. I am convinced the team will make good progress and surprise a few people.

"In Geoff Willis and chief designer Paul White they have engineers who know very well how to build competitive racing cars. I would love to develop it further. And they are masters of efficiency like no other team on the grid.”

Ferrari amend 2011 car name, Rigon makes test debut

Ferrari have made a further revision to the name of their 2011 car after settling a dispute with Ford. It will now be known as the 150° Italia.

The car was launched as the F150 in late January, but the moniker prompted objections from Ford, who produce a best-selling pick-up truck of the same name in the US. In response Ferrari announced the car would become known by its full title, the F150th Italia.

Now, with Ford having withdrawn the threat of legal action, Ferrari have made a final tweak, dropping the ‘F’ prefix and changing the English ‘th’ to the Italian equivalent. The name is a tribute to the 150th anniversary of Italian unification.

Vettel: Title hasn’t changed my life too much

As Formula One racing’s youngest-ever world champion, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel would be forgiven for feeling a tiny bit pleased with himself as he targets a successful defence of his 2010 title this season. But a low-key Vettel is keen to dismiss any suggestion that having the number one plastered to his car will make any difference in 2011.

“It was good over winter to have a little bit of time to myself,” the 23 year-old German told Red Bull’s official website. “I spent it together with friends and family. We have started again with the new cars, preparing for the new season so after all I wouldn’t say life has changed too much.

Stewart undergoes checks after Health Scare

Three-time world champion Jackie Stewart was hospitalised briefly on Wednesday after being taken ill on a flight from Geneva to London. Stewart underwent precautionary checks, but is expected to make a full recovery.

The 71-year-old Scot complained of chest pains during the journey and was met by paramedics at London’s Heathrow Airport before being taken to Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge. He was discharged on Wednesday evening and is now resting at home.

Linkin Park to headline Singapore off-track entertainment

As if Formula One's only night race wasn’t exciting enough, Singapore Grand Prix organisers have also announced multi award-winning band Linkin Park will head up this year's off-track entertainment. Full details of the complete line-up for September’s Marina Bay event will be announced over the coming months.

Grammy Award-winning Linkin Park have sold over 50 million albums worldwide since their debut album, Hybrid Theory, was released in 1996. The Californian rockers' latest release, A Thousand Suns, debuted at the top of Billboard’s Top 200 album chart and has produced two number-one singles. A Thousand Suns marks the third consecutive Linkin Park album to reach number one.

“We’ve had very positive feedback from our enhanced entertainment programme in 2010 and our announcement of Linkin Park is just the start of another stellar line-up of artistes for 2011,” explained Michael Roche, executive director, Singapore GP Pte Ltd. “All tickets offer incredible value for money with world-class entertainment, all included in the price of the one ticket.”

Glock set to miss final test after appendix operation

Virgin’s Timo Glock is expected to miss next week’s final pre-season test at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix on Monday. Glock is currently recovering in a hospital in Switzerland following the routine operation.

Kubica starts rehabilitation programme

Renault’s Robert Kubica has been transferred from intensive care to the rehabilitation department of Italy’s Santa Corona Hospital as he continues to recover from the injuries he sustained in a rally accident earlier this month.

“He is doing pretty well and his condition is positive considering what he has been through,” the hospital’s Dr Rossello told Renault’s official website on Tuesday. “He can move his fingers slightly and has a little bit of sensitivity already in his hand. What is very important is that there is no sign of infection, which is the main concern.

The Polish driver is expected to stay in the hospital’s rehabilitation department for at least a fortnight.

Trulli Crashes

Lotus’s Barcelona test programme came to a premature halt on Monday morning when Jarno Trulli crashed at the Circuit de Catalunya’s Turn Nine due to a car failure. Trulli was unhurt, but without the necessary parts to repair the T128, the team were forced to abandon the last of their four days in Spain.

“It's obviously disappointing to have the test cut short like this but these things happen in motor racing,” said Trulli. “We started the day well and until the accident happened I had picked up where I left off yesterday.

Trulli had completed just 18 laps when he suffered his off, but chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne remained upbeat with Lotus’s progress, the T128 having now run for over 2,400 kilometres since testing began.

Bell joins Mercedes as Technical Director

Former Renault team head Bob Bell has been appointed as Mercedes GP’s technical director with effect from April 1. Reporting to team principal Ross Brawn, Bell’s role will primarily be based at the team's UK factory in Brackley with overall responsibility for the technical operations of their chassis group.

Bell’s appointment is designed to allow Brawn greater freedom to oversee the team’s full programme between the chassis group in Brackley and their engine group at Mercedes-Benz HighPerformanceEngines in Brixworth.

Renault confirm Heidfeld

Renault have announced that Nick Heidfeld has joined the team, taking over driving duties from the injured Robert Kubica, starting at this week’s test session in Barcelona. It follows his evaluation at Jerez last week.

The 33-year-old German is one of the most experienced drivers in Formula One, having started 172 races over the last 11 seasons. He will race alongside Vitaly Petrov when the new season gets underway in Bahrain on March 13.

Reliability Challenge for Mercedes GP

Mercedes GP’s hit and miss performance at the recent Jerez test has prompted some to speculate that the team are on the back foot ahead of the 2011 season.

“Reliability is our main challenge at the moment,” Brawn told Mercedes GP’s official website. “Although we have completed the third highest mileage of any team with our new car (a total of 2310km), our level of reliability is not where it needs to be yet. We have experienced our share of teething problems with the MGP W02 but we have solutions in the pipeline to resolve them.

“The second pre-season test in Jerez was extremely useful. Our priorities at this stage are improving the reliability of the new car, working with the KERS system, and developing our understanding of the Pirelli tyres. We had good reliability for the middle two days which allowed us to accumulate mileage and collect a lot of data to study ahead of the next test in Barcelona this weekend."

Online launch for Force India

Force India have unveiled their 2011 challenger online ahead of its track debut later this week. After finishing seventh in the 2010 constructors’ championship, the team hope the Mercedes-engined VJM04 will power them to even greater things in 2011.

The new car will be raced by Adrian Sutil and reigning DTM champion Paul di Resta.

The VJM04 has been designed in-house at the team's UK facility by a unit led by technical director Andrew Green. Although an evolution of its predecessor, the new car is very different thanks to 2011’s rule changes and features a moveable rear wing, a KERS system and a new-look roll hoop.

"Exhaust management will also be a big area of development this year. There will be an upgrade for the first race, so there are some changes that will come into effect at the Bahrain test. Further down the line there are some big updates for the front of the car coming in for the first European race."

Green is also keen to build development momentum over the course of the season and plans to use the Fridays of race weekends more thoroughly by placing a greater emphasis on gathering data.

Following its launch on Tuesday, the VJM04 will make its testing debut at the Spanish circuit of Jerez on Thursday, as the second multi-team pre-season test session gets underway at the Spanish circuit.

Force India VJM04

Force India have revealed the first images of their 2011 F1 car, the VJM04.
The VJM04 is the first car designed by new technical director Andrew Green. Its predecessor achieved the team’s best-ever constructors’ championship position of seventh.
This year the team say they want to finish in the top five.
The team will use Mercedes power for the third year in a row.
Chairman Vijay Mallya said: “This year there is even more to be optimistic about. We’ve got three race drivers that are hungry to take the next steps in their careers, whether that be points, podiums or wins.
“We have an experienced technical team that have the ingenuity, flexibility and drive to adapt to the new wave of rule changes, and we also have the tools and resources in our partnerships with McLaren Applied Technologies and Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines to aim even higher.
“Not to mention the very special event, and one that I personally can’t wait for, the inaugural Indian Grand Prix. What better place would there be to reach some of those aims than on our home soil?”
Adrian Sutil said he hopes to finish in the top ten in the drivers’ championship for the first time this year:
“The progress the team has shown over the past two years has been very impressive and what I’ve seen in the factory and at the wind tunnel over the past weeks indicates that the rate will continue this year.”
Paul di Resta makes his F1 debut with the team this year. He said: “I don’t want to say exact targets on record as there are so many factors that can come into play.
“What I do want to do is to have a positive approach, finish, be consistent and contribute strongly to the team’s overall performance. We’ve got high aims of finishing in a good constructors’ championship position and I know that I’ve got to play my part in this.”
Technical director Andy Green explained some of the changes on the car:
“The most obvious visual change is that we’ve gone away from a conventional roll-hoop to a blade. This gives us a small packaging improvement compared to a more conventional style.
“The engine cover is different, in-line with the abolition of the F-duct system. But there are a lot of differences under the skin that people won’t necessarily notice.”
“We’ve recovered a lot of the aerodynamic performance, we believe. We still have a little bit to go, but we are still in the process of the realignment after the end of last season, because it does take a long time to move aerodynamically from one position to another.
“The movable wing is a whole new game, and we’ll be trying to exploit its performance to the max.
“Exhaust management will also be a big area of development this year. There will be an upgrade for the first race, so there are some changes that will come into effect at the Bahrain test. Further down the line there are some big updates for the front of the car coming in for the first European race.”
The team have recruited a new senior tyre engineer, Jun Matsusaki, to help with the switch to Pirelli tyres.
Greem also confirmed the new car will use a Kinetic Energy Recovery System: “‘The Mercedes KERS system looks very strong, and we’re really happy with it.

HRT F111 Launch

HRT have revealed the first pictures of their 2011 F1 car, the F111.
Team principal Colin Kolles said: “The F111 represents a significant step forward for Hispania Racing.
“We have made a big improvement for starting our second season in Formula 1 and what you see in our new car confirms Hispania Racing´s commitment to F1.”
The F111 was designed by Geoff Willis and Paul White. The team confirmed it will have an adjustable rear wing. However it will not have a Kinetic Energy Recovery System.
HRT aim to run the car for the first time in the pre-season test at Bahrain which begins on March 3rd.
Team president Jose Ramon Carabante said: “We feel really proud of the car our drivers will run this forthcoming season.
“Despite a challenging first year, we managed to finish on the 11th position in the World Constructors Championship. Now, we are very pleased to introduce the first specification of the F111, which means a huge design-effort from our side.
“This is only a first step as we are planning several updates during the season.”
The car’s distinctive livery was designed by Daniel Simon of Cosmic Motors. He said, “I miss fearless visual statements and large beautiful numbers on today’s racing cars.
“Playing with the restrictions of what you can do to a complex F1 body is fun. There are many don’ts, but I found a way to lay courageous racing essence on the car.”
However aside from sponsorship from Tata, thanks to new driver Narain Karthikeyan, the F111′s bodywork features few sponsors.
Instead the bodywork shown includes the messages: “This could be you” and “This is a cool spot”.

Virgin MVR-02 Launch

Virgin have launched their 2011 F1 car, the MVR-02.
The car was launched at BBC Television Centre in London.
As last year, the car was designed entirely using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), without using a wind tunnel.
Following the arrival of Russian sports car company Maurssia as an investor the team are now registered under a Russian licence. The air intake on the front of the MVR-02 is designed to resemble the one on Marussia’s B2 road car.
The car will run for the first time in the Jerez test later this week. Some of the car’s internals, including its hydraulics, were already run on the VR-01 at Valencia last week.
Designer Nick Wirk confirmed the MVR-02 has not been designed to use KERS, citing the expense of developing the technology as a reason for its absence.

McLaren MP4-26 Launch

McLaren have launched their 2011 F1 car in Berlin.
Here are the first pictures of the car.
McLaren staged an unusual launch in Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz. Competition winners brought different pieces of the car and they were assembled together in front of the public and press.
Team principal Martin Whitmarsh said: “I think today’s innovative launch demonstrates the enthusiasm within Vodafone McLaren Mercedes to engage the general public; to show them that our sport is intense and exciting and that we’re very keen to showcase Formula 1 to the wider world.”
As well as featuring KERS and an adjustable rear wing, as permitted by the 2011 rules, the MP4-26 sports an unusual U-shaped sidepod arrangement. McLaren say the layout is to direct air to the rear of the car more efficiently.

Toro Rosso STR6 Launch

The Toro Rosso STR6 has been launched in Valencia.
Here are the first pictures of Toro Rosso’s new car:

Williams FW33 Revealed
